Simon Conley was born a werewolf, making him one of a tiny minority in a sea of vanilla humans. The safety of the pack lies in absolute secrecy, sometimes violently enforced. In a species where pack-members are born and not made, being gay is considered a perversion. So when Simon falls in love with a human man, he's twice damned. Even his Alpha's grudging tolerance may not be enough to shield him from the hatred of the other top wolves. Then his lover Paul stumbles across pack secrets Simon was sworn to keep, and if the pack finds out, they may both end up dead.
Unacceptable Risk Hidden Wolves Book 1 edition by Kaje Harper Literature Fiction eBooks
This book is a reminder that even if you can predict how everything will play out, if the writing is good enough you can still really enjoy the story. This is a story of relationship and pack politics. While it is successful on both fronts, the former is far more enjoyable than the latter. The courtship between Simon and Paul is so sweet, and the push and pull between attraction, fear, and doubt makes for a fascinating dynamic. Paul's concerns and hesitation especially struck a chord for me. Harper has done a great job in building these characters and their personalities, and indeed constructing a believable niche for werewolves in modern society as well. (Side note: props for either having good knowledge of the day-to-day life and concerns of a veterinarian or doing some really excellent research!)The pack politics part was the weaker part of the story for me. I was mildly annoyed at the HUGE cast of background characters, all with single short first names that were easy to get confused. This was a minor nitpick since really there are only a few principals that you need to remember. I especially liked Aaron and I look forward to reading more about him later in this series.
As for predictability, about two-thirds through the book I guessed how the critical issues would be resolved. While I was mostly right, there were just enough twists in there to keep things interesting. This was a very entertaining and extremely sexy read! No shyness here, but given the relationship concerns addressed even the intimate moments helped further the plot.
On a side note, I would urge any reader to download the free short story, Unsettled Interlude, that immediately follows the action in the book. It really is more of an epilogue, and actually speaks to a lot of the unresolved concerns I had at the end of the book. That epilogue makes the whole story better. Also, having finished the series, it only gets better and better from here!

Unacceptable Risk Hidden Wolves Book 1 edition by Kaje Harper Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This book deserves the entire 5 star review I gave it. So many times the current werewolf/ paranomral mm romance books are slammed together and give us a little background and lots of sex. This author created a world that pulled the reader in deep and delighted us with page turning excitement.
I loved the way that the author took a popular subject, twisted and turned it, and made it her own. I read alot of paranormal romance both with mf and mm characters. This is one of the top mm in this genre. I stumbled onto this book by accident and wished I had seen it before. I don't know where it has been hiding so as soon as I finished it I wanted to get the review out there so others might get to try it to.
Simon is a werewolf. He is also gay. This has been deadly for him. After one horrible attack he is found by the human vet Paul. Paul takes the "dog" back to his clinic to treat him.
This starts everything....
This book has humor ( I love when Simon has to act like wolf to get Paul to believe the daog is ok.) This book has suspense (because yes the first attach on Simon is not the last. Someone is really trying to kill him.) It has romance (more sweet sex then just hungry jump in the bed together.) And this story has characters you want to learn more about.
I have already purchased the next book with Aaron. I am excited to see where the plot will go. The end of this book was such a surprise I believe it will only get better.
Highly recommened!
I loved the first half. Paul a vet meets wounded wolf, tends his injuries, wants to keep him. The wolf is werewolf Simon. Then Paul meets human Simon. Simon loves Paul from the start. Paul didn't think he was gay but he sure does enjoy sex with Simon. It's neat relationship development. It's also got suspense. A group of werewolves try to kill Simon more than once. Simon is the only gay werewolf in the pack. They hate him because of that.
The last third was ok, but wasn't as fun. It was more like filling in the story to finish it. There was some info dump about how the werewolf world operates and how it came to be. It wasn't bad, it was just kind of textbookish. Then Paul has some internal pondering about what he learned and what he feels.
There were several gay male sex scenes with back-door action. They were good.
It wasn't a big deal, but the following bothered me. The author did not give me the logic why Simon would not tell anyone when others tried to kill him. The alpha can read minds and all the wolves have some mental telepathy. So they knew Simon was hurt. But when anyone asked Simon what happened he just said something like "I fell." Why not say someone tried to kill him?
I did not like Paul's stupidity in the Spoiler below. Paul should never have said a word. His interference was harmful.
CAUTION SPOILER
Two wolves are fighting to the death. The good wolf is winning, so Paul says "stop." The good wolf stops, then the bad wolf uses that to advantage.
END SPOILER.
THE SERIES
This is the first book in the Hidden Wolves series. It was a complete story with a happy ending.
